About Ongira

I went to my first yoga class, an epiphany happened and I discovered the cosmic connection between myself and the universe - no wait, actually that trope is the western version. I’m supposed to use the ethnic one - I grew up dangling on my grandfather’s lap watching him do sun salutations at sunrise. Nope, so not true! I spent my former life writing software (now there’s another stereotype for you).

While I did grow up with yoga, I became a believer gradually. I question the efficacy, and proof behind it all the time. My teaching and learning comes from that place: curiosity over dogma, experience over belief, and respect for both the body and the questions we bring to the mat.

What I really value is its simplicity. Yoga doesn’t require anything external: no equipment, no belief system. Just you, barefoot, paying attention to your body, and working with its remarkable capacity and limitations.

I am still in awe of how a bunch of sages in a quest for salvation created such a  practical, self-reliant, preventative practice for staying strong and healthy, as we age. Refined over centuries through trial, error, and transmission, it is truly a gift for mankind!

Many components of yoga are now supported by modern science, and with every class I attempt to blend that ancient wisdom with modern understanding. Within every session, I look to extend the physical asanas to the restorative and curative aspects of yoga; to seek the balance that is the essence of yoga - the connection between the mind, body, and breath.
